If your needs swing to the national stage, Mr. Smith can help you propose changes to the model codes and standards. His expertise was recognized by several 3-year appointment to the International Code Councils Building Code Action Committee (BCAC). The inaugural committee was responsible for proposing 78 code change proposals to the IBC, IEBC, IFC and IRC. Of those 78 proposals, 56 were approved. In addition to the code change proposals, the BCAC provided 4 public comments to suggest improvements on proposals from others and 2 were approved. Those efforts helped contribute to a significantly improved 2015 edition of the I-codes. As a part of the process Mr. Smith acted as chair of the task group working on proposals focusing on improvements to the International Existing Building Code. Jim's continued work on the BCAC included improvements to the 2018, 2021 and upcoming 2024 I-Codes.
Jim was on the ICC Region III Board of Directors and is currently chair of their Code Development Committee. He also assists with the WCOA (Wisconsin Code Officials Alliance) efforts to promote changes to the Wisconsin Commercial Building Code and the State Statutes that create the foundation for Wisconsin's codes.
